Introduction This policy has been established in order to ensure that The Family Haven (TFH) is able to contine to function for so long as there exists a demand for its services. 2. Reserves 2.1 Reserves are maintained in order to provide financial stability and to protect the work of TFH against risk arising from potential fluctuations in the levels of income. The general reserves policy has been developed by reference to the historical record of TFH and its predessessor, The Haven Trust. 2.2 The primary policy, the one to be disclosed in public documents, is that free reserves (general reserves less fixed assets) shall be should be maintained at a level equivalent to at least six months otherwise unfunded expenditure. 2.3 In the event that reserves fall below the above target level the trustees shall take timely and proportionate action to direct their own efforts, and those of the appropriate staff, towards publicity and fundraising activities. 2.3 A secondary target, to be monitored by the trustees, is that free reserves shall be at least equal to: budgeted costs for the next twelve months, less restricted reserves, to the extent that they may be applied against such costs, less grant income which has been committed but not yet received and will be available for use against such costs. 2.4 The level of general reserves shall be assessed at least annually, in April of each year. 3. Funding Efforts shall be aimed at ensuring that income is sufficient to meet the above level of general reserves. This shall be achieved wherever possible by seeking multi-year funding, and by avoiding over dependence on a small number of donors. It is desirable that no single source should provide more that 33% of the budgeted income in a financial year. 4. Public Image Publicity efforts shall be aimed at establishing a wide awareness and a positive view of TFH and its work among the general public, and in statutory, corporate and fund-granting organisations. 5. Trustees Trustees shall be recruited with a view to diversity, sound experience in a related field or professional expertise in a relevant area. Advertisements shall be placed with an agency that specialises in the identification of suitable candidates. Such candidates shall be given first-hand experience of the work of the Family Haven, interviewed by two existing Trustees and if they are considered suitable, invited to a Trustees meeting. Appointment shall be conditional on the approval of the Trustees generally.
