To achieve this we will provide a warm, caring and supportive environment, at a day centre and other venues, where assistance and encouragement is available to help each family to improve the quality of their lives. Values The Haven promotes understanding, tolerance and respect towards each other. Its services remain flexible, non-judgemental and confidential, providing equal opportunity to all. Objectives 1) To empower families to take a greater responsibility for their own well-being. 2) To broaden possible life experiences. 3) To improve health, including mental health of parents and children. 4) To improve opportunities for pre-school children. 5) To encourage development of new skills for parents and children. 6) To encourage mutual support amongst the families. 7) To improve parenting skills. 8) To enable parents and children to maintain a nutritious diet. Activities The objectives shall be addressed by undertaking the following activities. 1a) Inform clients of their rights, giving advice on benefits, housing, budgeting etc. (referring to other agencies as appropriate). b) Provide a friendly environment for parents to mix socially and support each other. c) Active listening using counselling skills (referring to other agencies as appropriate). Build confidence and self-esteem. Carry out advocacy work when appropriate. f) Assist vulnerable families who do not attend 31 Spa Road, e.g. those at Gloucester Prison Visitors Centre. 2a) Arrange trips and outings for parents and children. Provide alternative therapy sessions. Hold parties to celebrate religious/cultural festivals etc. 3a) Provide respite for parents and children within a safe environment b) Offer creche facilities to enable parents to access other services. c) Build up confidence and self-esteem by providing counselling skills. Liase with CPNs, Health Visitors, Social Workers etc. regarding specific cases. Run information sessions on various health issues. Promote hygiene by providing bathroom and laundry facilities. 4a) Provide a warm, safe and friendly nursery for pre-school children. Develop pre-school skills e.g. colours, numbers, hand eye co-ordination, gross and fine motor skills etc. c) Provide an opportunity for children to express themselves without fear of sanction. d) Provide play opportunities and facilities to encourage physical development. e) Adopt a firm but fair approach to discipline in a secure, constant and loving manner. Help children learn to play in the space provided, interacting with their peers and encouraging their social development. Promote independence by developing the childrens confidence, encouraging the use of self-help skills. 5a) Inform clients of available training opportunities. b) Provide art/craft workshops. Provide information sessions. Teach pre-school skills( physical, intellectual, emotional, social and language). 6a) Provide a warm friendly environment for parents to meet. b) Encourage buddying. 7a) Hold parenting classes and information sessions. b) Show parents how to interact with their children. Stress the importance of pre-school education. Help clients find appropriate playgroups, pre-schools and schools. 8a) Provide a hot midday meal. b) Advise on nutrition and healthy eating on a budget. c) Give out food parcels when necessary. Quality Asurance The Family Haven is committed to excellence in all aspects of its work and has a quality assurance programme. Responses to Requests from Other Agencies Whilst we recognise our responsibility to respond to requests from other agencies we remain apolitical. Therefore we will not undertake anything that might be construed as detrimental to our standing.
